SBS Volume 43
Post-Enies Lobby SBS. Major canon-leaks:
- Full Water 7 / CP9 birthday canonization: Iceburg Jan 3, Franky Mar 9, Paulie Jul 8, Rob Lucci Jun 2, Kaku Aug 7, Kalifa Apr 23 (Secretaries’ Day) — Oda confirms all six reader-proposed pun-derived birthdays.
- Robin’s Spanish numbers 1-10 chart (Uno through Diez).
- Enel’s hypothetical Blue-Sea bounty = 500,000,000 Berry (would not rule it; just survive it; Luffy was lucky to be rubber).
- Klabautermann (ship spirit) is a real German sailor legend; Japanese equivalent is “funadama” (spirit of the ship); Oda’s Vol 35 Ch. 351 Klabautermann concept is a borrowed real-world legend, not invented — pre-loads the Going Merry farewell.
- Sodom and Gomorrah are named after the biblical cities destroyed by God — being attacked by the “God-like” World Government is intentional thematic structure.
- “Happa” = the kindly old guy who gave Usopp rice balls in Vol 36 — bachelor (once-divorced) bandit-turned-carpenter who relocated from Pucci (Water 7’s gourmet town); the rice balls contained the Water 7 specialty “Mizu Mizu Meat.”
Q&A
Chapter 410, Page 28 — Robin’s Spanish numbers 1-10
Q (Zoro’s Wife): A Buster Call has been ordered on Eiichiro Oda’s house! A: Oh my God! But I can’t run away — the boys and girls are waiting for the SBS!
Q (Heita): Robin’s “Cinco Fleur” — why “Gorin” (Five Flowers) turning into “Cinco”? Couldn’t you just say “Gorin-zaki”? A: It’s Spanish. This is how it works:
| Number | Spanish |
|---|---|
| 1 | Uno |
| 2 | Dos |
| 3 | Tres |
| 4 | Cuatro |
| 5 | Cinco |
| 6 | Seis |
| 7 | Siete |
| 8 | Ocho |
| 9 | Nueve |
| 10 | Diez |
Chapter 411, Page 48 — Sodom/Gomorrah + Happa-san
Q (Yoiko): Do the names Sodom and Gomorrah come from the cities in the Old Testament destroyed by God? Are they integrated by being destroyed by the “Godly” World Government? A: Uh… One Piece isn’t that deep of a story (lol). But it IS where I got the names from.
Q (Nice Old Guy): I want to know the name of the guy who gave Usopp the rice balls in Volume 36. A: Happa-san, a kindly old bandit-turned-carpenter. He moved there from Pucci, the town of gourmets. He’s a bachelor once-divorced, so he made those rice balls by himself. Packed inside them were the Water Seven specialty, Mizu Mizu Meat, so they must have been quite good.
Q (Zororin Love): Blows shouldn’t hurt Luffy, so why does he get bruises when Nami beats him up? A: When the crew beats up on each other, it’s always in admonishment with a strong sense of purpose, which is why it works so well!! It works on his spirit!!
Chapter 413, Page 88 — International SBS + Kalifa Tekkai gag
Q (La Volonté du D, France): Oda-sama, we send you a letter as the representative of a French fansite of over 1,000 members! Do you have a good french bread? “Que la volonté du D soit avec vous, Mr Oda!” A: The SBS has finally reached international status. The answer is, I DON’T HAVE ANY FRENCH BREAD.
Q (Kathy Keisuke): When Kalifa uses Tekkai, do her breasts still jiggle? A: I’M JUST A PEEPING TOM NOW. BEY BIBBIN BIBBUH (They didn’t jiggle.)
Chapter 415, Page 128 — Water 7 / CP9 birthdays canonized
Q (Exam Student): Since SBS birthday canonizations are basically ritual, I’d like to take control of Water 7 and CP9 birthdays:
- Iceburg — January 3 (Aisu… I=1, Su=3)
- Franky — March 9 (Saibōgu “Cyborg”… Sa=3, Gu=9)
- Paulie — July 8 (Nawa “Rope”… Na=7, Wa=8)
- Rob Lucci — June 2 (Robu… Ro=6, Bu=2)
- Kaku — August 7 (Hana “Nose”… Ha=8, Na=7)
- Kalifa — April 23 (Secretaries’ Day)
A: Ahhh… I see. There’s a Secretaries’ Day? Huh. Well then. Those all work for me.
Q (Gorozoro): If God Enel descended to the Blue Sea, how much would his bounty be? Would he rule it? A: Knowing how tricky he would be to beat, I’d imagine he could reach as much as 500,000,000. Luffy was lucky to be rubber. But like Luffy said, there are all sorts of even crazier guys down on the Blue Sea. Enel would NOT rule it.
Chapter 417, Page 168 — Parage Shot cosmetic limits
Q (34590): When Sanji uses Parage Shot, how pretty will it make you? A: Awesomely pretty. International movie star good looks. But: one, Sanji don’t kick the ladies. Two, he only changes your face. If you’re a fatty boombah, you’re just gonna look like a creep with a nice face.
Q (Jon): Why does One Piece sometimes have 10-11 chapters per volume instead of 9? A: A comic volume needs at least 184 pages, which 9 chapters usually reaches, but sometimes I selfishly desire this chapter to be in yon volume.
Chapter 418, Page 188 — Klabautermann real-world legend + Kakukaku-san pun
Q (Secret Face Behind the Luffy Pirates): The Klabautermann in Vol 35 Ch. 351 — was that your idea or from real life? A: There are similar legends all around the world about ship fairies, but the Klabautermann legend in particular comes from German sailors. In Japan they call it “funadama” (spirit of the ship). It’s easy just to think of it as the “guardian spirit of the ship”. They believed that if a Klabautermann lived on the ship, you would sail safe and sound.
Q (Prince from Somewhere): Volume 35, page 131, third panel left — there’s an even pointier (kaku-kaku) guy. Who is that? A: His name is KAKUKAKU-SAN!!! Erudite (hakugaku), argues outspokenly (kenken gakugaku), easily frightened (trembles “kakukaku”). SEE YOU NEXT TIME!!

Notable canon-leaks
- Water 7 / CP9 birthday block (canonical):
- Iceburg — January 3
- Franky — March 9
- Paulie — July 8
- Rob Lucci — June 2
- Kaku — August 7
- Kalifa — April 23 (Secretaries’ Day)
- All six pun-derived from reader proposal; Oda fully ratified. These are now standard canon character-birthdays.
- Sodom & Gomorrah named after the Biblical cities destroyed by God → paralleled by destruction by the “God-like” World Government. Confirms the WG-as-pseudo-divine thematic register, with the Buster Call functioning as Oda’s raining-fire-on-Sodom parallel.
- Klabautermann is a real German sailor legend; not Oda-invented. Pre-loads the Going Merry farewell with mythic legitimacy. Japanese equivalent: funadama (船霊 / 船魂).
- Robin’s Spanish 1-10 chart (Uno through Diez) — full reference for all “Fleur” attacks.
- Enel hypothetical Blue Sea bounty = 500M Berry; explicit “would NOT rule it.” Power-scaling reveal: even a high-bounty Logia is mid-tier in the broader OP world; Luffy’s rubber affinity to lightning was luck, not a guaranteed counter for all readers.
- Happa-san: Vol 36’s anonymous rice-ball-old-man is now named; bandit-turned-carpenter from Pucci (Water 7 gourmet town). Rice balls contained Mizu Mizu Meat (the Water 7 specialty meat).
- Pucci canonized as Water 7’s gourmet town — connected to Water 7 via the Sea Express (per Vol 47 SBS).
- Kakukaku-san — a recurring background-character with a pun-name (kaku = angle; kakukaku = both “tremble” and “verbose argument”).
SBS reveals (cross-linked)
- Helmeppo / Koby — birthday-canonization-via-pun precedent matches the Vol 47 Koby/Helmeppo birthday pattern
- Iceburg/Franky/Paulie/Lucci/Kaku/Kalifa — birthday-block canonization (notes don’t exist yet)
- Klabautermann legend → Merry Survived / Merry: provides the real-world myth-backing for the Going Merry farewell
- Usopp — Happa-san rice-balls callback
