- Sea
- East Blue
- Region
- Syrup Village
- First seen
- Ch. 23
- Name meaning
- Descriptive — *Kaya no Yashiki* (カヤの屋敷, 'Kaya's mansion'). 'Kaya' is Japanese 萱 *kaya* — silver-grass/thatching-grass (also the proper name common in Japan and many other languages). The mansion is named for its sickly-young-heiress inhabitant; the eponym carries the load. See Kaya for the character-name etymology (silver-grass/thatching-grass; possibly also a Greek/Turkish allusion).
Region: Syrup Village · First appearance: Ch. 23
Profile
Large hilltop mansion overlooking Syrup Village. Home of Kaya, the bedridden young heiress whose parents died of illness about a year before Ch 23, leaving her “a huge inheritance, a mansion, and a dozen servants” (Ch. 23 p. 17). Staffed by butler Klahadore (silhouette-only first appearance, Ch. 23 p. 19). The mansion is described in-chapter as “that huge mansion that stands out like a sore thumb” — explicitly set up as the village’s only large building, visually anchoring the arc’s the-resources-are-up-there setup. See Kaya Mansion Setup and Going Merry Setup.
Etymology
Not a named etymology — possessive of Kaya (Kaya no Yashiki = “Kaya’s residence”).
Key chapters
Ch. 41 — Implicit background: Kaya and Merry walk the mansion woods (pages 14-17); the second-request cliffhanger
- The mansion’s woods are the setting for Kaya’s monologue on Usopp’s backstory (pages 14-17). The mansion itself is implied as the setting for Kaya’s “Merry, I…” second-request cliffhanger (page 18).
- The mansion is no longer the prize-target of a villain plot (Ch 23-39 register) — it is now a patron’s-base and the household-memory-bearer venue.
- Ch. 40 — Arc-finale: gift-source confirmation pending. The mansion’s role as the village’s resource concentration (per Going Merry Setup) is operationally cashed out here. Kaya commits to backing Usopp’s cover-up (page 13) and addresses Merry by name with the chapter-final “one more request” — the unspoken cliffhanger setup for the gift of the Going Merry (Ch 41 payoff). First on-page mention of Merry the butler by name lands in the same panel as the request — the seed and the named character are bonded in one composition. The mansion is now the gift-source in the same way it was the plot-target — Kuro’s three-year scheme was to extract the mansion’s wealth via legalist murder; the same mansion freely gifts the wealth (in the form of a ship) once Kuro is ejected. Compositional choice: Kaya’s smile is the panel’s emotional anchor — unmistakably generous, telegraphing that the request is a gift, not a demand.
- Ch. 23 — First appearance (p. 19, low-angle exterior shot). The chapter stages the mansion as a setting-that-will-matter, with Kaya at the window and Klahadore in silhouette inside.
- Ch. 24 — Full on-page introduction. Grand European-style estate with iron gates (ornate scrollwork), gravel drive, three-story facade with central clock-tower-like rooftop element. Interior: an ornate second-story bedroom (Kaya’s) overlooking a back garden with a tall tree under the bedroom window — Usopp’s daily storytelling perch. Introduced via the “THE MANSION” label-panel (page 6). Klahadore explicitly invokes the “Your late parents entrusted me with your welfare” (page 7) guardianship structure — the legal-mechanical lever of the arc.
- Ch. 25 — Kaya’s bedroom is the staging space for Klahadore’s pivotal “Three years ago, I came to this estate…” origin monologue (pages 7-9). The mansion’s wealth differential (page 6 exterior shot rendered substantially larger than any other village structure) is foregrounded as the conspiracy’s prize. By the chapter cliffhanger the mansion has been named as the assassination target of Operation “Murder Miss Kaya”. See Operation Murder Kaya.
- Ch. 31 — Truth-utterance setting. The mansion’s interior carries the first half of the chapter (pages 1-10): Kaya’s bedroom, the corridor outside, the exterior steps where Merry is discovered bleeding. The mansion’s depopulated-by-design status is revealed (Merry, page 8): the entire household staff is on vacation since yesterday by Klahadore’s order. Only Kaya, Klahadore (off-page), and the wounded Merry are present. The chapter’s emotional pivot — Kaya’s commitment to confront Klahadore alone — happens on the exterior steps over Merry’s bleeding body.
