Why this matters
This is a debut-composition restaging, not a coincidence: Oda reuses one panel grammar — Newgate seated as a colossus filling the upper register + a name-caption anchored at the frame’s edge + a DOOM sound-block overhead — to introduce the same man at the two poles of his life. The present-day debut (ch. 234) shows the legend seated but failing, surrounded by medical gear, the giant hand at rest; the flashback debut (ch. 963) re-runs the layout at the legend’s rise — vital, ship at his back, hand lifted in command. When a flashback re-introduces an already-iconic character, watch for Oda quoting that character’s original debut frame: the seated pose and the edge-anchored name-caption are the load-bearing constants, and the state (frail→hale, idle hand→raised hand, sickbed→ship) is what carries the meaning. This panel grammar is the same one Oda inverts in the war (the idle hand becomes the “I AM WHITEBEARD” fist — see cross-link); ch. 963 is the third corner of the introduction-frame triangle, holding the seated-debut layout constant while flipping decline back to ascent.
