Why this matters

Parallels the Zoro Bamboo Cover Story structure that ran during the Orange Town arc (Ch. 20+). Pattern: each major recruit gets a cover-story B-plot when they’re offscreen from the A-plot of an arc — Oda’s paratext foreshadowing channel. The cover-stories track recruits across their off-page moments and (in the Zoro instance) encode long-burn identity-foreshadowing (the bamboo-and-samurai-panda Zoro cover prefigures the Wano-Shimotsuki identity hundreds of chapters later).

Register difference from Zoro cover-story: Usopp is on-page in the A-plot of Ch. 35 (he’s actively in the slope-defense and lands the chapter’s emotional climax), but the cover-splash is the fantasy / future Usopp — a symbolic B-plot rather than a temporally-offstage B-plot. The Usopp cover-story is aspirational (showing what Usopp imagines his pirate life as), whereas the Zoro cover-story was temporally-offstage (showing where Zoro is during Orange Town). Both are cover-story-as-character-identity-coding — the register difference is the channel Oda uses for Usopp’s distinct character grammar (the imagination-aspirational register matches his liar-becoming-truth character mechanic per Usopp Liar Who Tells Truth).

Pattern projection

If the pattern holds, subsequent Syrup Village chapter covers will continue the Usopp Pirate Voyage B-plot in additional installments (small-craft adventures, encounter-with-creatures, etc.). The B-plot is expected to:

• Resolve in-saga — like Zoro’s bamboo-grove cover-story (which resolved off-page between Orange Town and Syrup Village)
• Visually rhyme with Usopp’s eventual ship-side / long-range / often-separated combat role — the small-craft-alone-at-sea composition is the precursor to every later Usopp arc-beat where he gets separated from the crew (Skypiea cloud-current separation, Water 7 split, Whole Cake mirror-world isolation)
• Use aspirational register, not temporal-offstage register — confirming the per-recruit cover-story-channel-aesthetic the seed predicts
