Ch. 71 pages 10-12 — Usopp jumps into the Arlong Park pool to save Zoro (bound, sinking) surrounded by Arlong-Pirates fishmen, no plan. Hauls Zoro out coughing. Page 12 — Usopp soaked, hugging Zoro: “What kind of cold-blooded witch woman… can’t stand to see a man drown?!”
Why this matters
Usopp performs the virtue Arlong denies — the cold-blooded witch woman label for Nami (page 9) is rebutted by Usopp’s warm-hearted-rescue of Zoro on the same page. The composition is Oda’s act-the-virtue-the-villain-disputes shape — the chapter’s moral-axis claim by the villain is operationally falsified by an unrelated character’s action.
The line itself is the chapter’s most-quoted: Usopp uses Arlong’s cold-blooded witch woman phrase in his own rescue-narration, defusing the label by enacting its opposite. The can’t stand to see a man drown clause is Usopp’s running self-narration register — he is the brave-coward who acts when the bar is impossibly high.
Forward-pattern: the Usopp brave-coward-acts-bravely-when-the-bar-is-impossible register is now operating in rescue-of-crewmate key, not just defend-the-village key (Ch. 36 Kaya-rescue).
