The seed
The payoff
Forward-canon: the two-brothers count expands to three with the Sabu reveal (~Ch. 0582+ childhood flashback). Sabu eventually eats the Mera Mera no Mi (post-Marineford, Dressrosa arc), completing the three-brothers / three-Devil-Fruit rhyme.
Why this matters
Single-sentence structural-rhyme pre-load. The two is doing forward-canon work — Oda’s number-count is deliberately under-counting by one (Sabu is alive at this point but presumed-dead by both brothers). The reader is set up to discover, hundreds of chapters later, that the two-brothers count was always three.
