Why this matters
The Ch. 50 belle-mère (French: stepmother) etymology is operationally vindicated. The family structure is step-family ; Nami’s family ties to Coco Village run through a step-mother and a step-sister. Forward-payoff: the Arlong-arc flashback will reveal the full origin (Bell-mère adopting both girls as orphans).

The Ch. 70 ‘Nami is my step-sister’ reveal is here terminologically refined: the title-card on page 6 reads ‘BELLE-MÈRE — NAMI AND NOJIKO’S FOSTER MOTHER’ — meaning the sister relationship is foster-sister , not step-sister. Both girls are foundlings adopted by Bell-mère from a battlefield (pages 16-17). They are not biologically related to each other or to Bell-mère. The belle-mère etymology advances from step-family to foster-chosen-family .

The Ch. 70 step-sister structural reveal is here re-keyed to foundling-adoption-step-family (not step-via-remarriage ). Bell-mère was unmarried and childless per the village records (page 12); both Nami and Nojiko were found (Nami’s page-16 line: “I… I wish I’d been found by rich people!!” ) and adopted. The step in step-sister is via shared adoptive mother , not via re-marriage.
