The seed
Why this matters
The grove is the third token in the Bell-mère memorial-cluster that defines the Arlong-arc-resolution:
- Ch. 78 — Bell-mère’s grave-cross with the straw hat (death + burial token)
- Ch. 95 — Pinwheel mounted on the grave + Nami’s tangerine-and-pinwheel tattoo (Cocoyasi-resident memorial tokens)
- Ch. 98 — Three of Bell-mère’s tangerine trees transplanted aboard the Going Merry (sailing memorial token)
The grove is the only memorial token that travels with the crew — Bell-mère’s livelihood literally sails with Nami for the rest of the series. Forward-pre-load: every later Going Merry / Thousand Sunny tangerine-grove beat operates downstream of this seed.
Sanji-as-grove-guardian is the chapter’s structural-load-bearing sub-beat — the cook protects the captain’s-mother’s-figure’s-living-asset from the captain. Forward-pre-load: a future Sanji-Luffy tangerine-tree-conflict beat is pre-loaded (Ch. 110+? Forward-canon).
Technique stack
- prop-tell — the trees as a recurring physical object aboard the Merry.
- parallel-arc-structure — the three-tree-count parallels Bell-mère’s grove (which was Coco Village’s only livelihood per Ch. 76+) on a miniature scale.
- chekhov-explicit — the paratext directly states the trees’ origin and Sanji’s protector-role.
