Three distinct dialogue-tell instances across Ch 9-20 install Nami’s Arlong-backstory wound entirely through dialogue, never through flashback or direct exposition.

The pattern is Oda’s signature wound-shaped negative-space: Nami’s backstory is audible in her dialogue choices long before it is visible in the Arlong-arc flashback.

What the pattern predicts

The three converging dialogue-tells calibrate the Arlong-arc flashback shape:

  1. A village-level wound (not a personal-only wound) — confirmed by the Boodle echo.
  2. A categorical-hostility wound (not a single-pirate wound) — confirmed by the Ch 20 moral-hierarchy codification.
  3. A quantified-ransom wound (a specific berry-number to a specific target) — confirmed by the Ch 9 100M berries to buy a certain village declaration.

The Ch 50 Nami Bell-mere Name Drop is the dialogue-tell’s name-drop installment — the wound’s target is now named (Bell-mère). The Arlong-arc flashback completes the dialogue-tell-to-flashback transition; until then, the wound is audible-only.
