The seed

Why this matters

The chapter installs the Bell-mère self-sacrifice-via-not-eating behavior — a Bell-mère characteristic that is the emotional engine for Nami’s ‘WE’RE NOT RELATED BY BLOOD’ outburst (Nami knows Bell-mère is sacrificing for them; the guilt is the chapter’s emotional fuel). The food-sacrifice pattern is one of Oda’s recurring parent-figure-tells — cf. Zeff sacrificing his leg for Sanji’s food (Ch. 56-57). The two East-Blue parent-figures (Zeff for Sanji, Bell-mère for Nami) both have food-sacrifice as their defining parental-love register. Forward-pattern: every recruit-backstory parent-figure in the series has a food-or-body-sacrifice tell (cf. Ace’s Dadan-foster-mother arc, Robin’s Olvia, etc.).
