The seed
The pattern (predicted)
Establishes that pirate is for Luffy a moral category with internal distinctions. There are pirates he wants to be (Shanks; Roger by implication; Whitebeard later) and pirates he refuses to be (Kuro; later: Krieg, Arlong, Crocodile, Akainu’s framing of all pirates as evil, etc.). The “a pirate like YOU” form is the prototype of every later Luffy refusal of a villain’s moral category.

The Marineford-era Luffy who weeps when Whitebeard dies and rejects Akainu’s “all pirates are evil” framing is operating downstream of this Ch 39 seed.
Why this matters
- The hat-handoff covenant (“become a great pirate” — Ch 1, Shanks to Luffy) had only a positive term. Ch 39 fills in the negative term: Luffy now knows what kind of pirate he refuses to be. The moral-content of the hat-handoff is being filled in from both sides.
- Distinguishes Luffy from the World Government’s flat all pirates are evil framing. Luffy’s pirate-identity is internally graded, not absolute. See Old Roger Is The Devil (the outside-world sees pirates as one category; Luffy doesn’t).
- The Kuro-archetype (plan-using, pawn-sacrificing, signed-document murderer) is structurally the anti-Shanks. Refusing the Kuro-kind is affirming the Shanks-kind.
