The seed
Why this matters
The chapter installs the lent-hat sub-axis of the Hat Handoff Promise motif. The straw hat’s load-bearing meaning expands from the Luffy/Shanks covenant-vessel to the protective-covenant-vessel Luffy can extend to a person he means to save. The hat is here used as a talisman of Luffy’s protection — Nami’s tears (the Ch. 80 doctrine-break re-firing) are received under the hat, not delivered to Luffy directly.
This is the first time the straw hat appears on a non-Luffy character’s head in any save-mode beat in the series. The composition is the forward-quote of the Ch. 1 Shanks-to-Luffy handoff (the prior backward-quote being the Ch. 18 page-16 re-render of the same composition inside the Buggy-fight flashback).
Predicted payoff
Forward-pattern: every later Luffy-lends-hat moment re-keys here.
- Vivi (Alabasta, ~Ch. 209+) — Luffy lends the hat to Vivi as a save-promise.
- Robin (Enies Lobby, ~Ch. 398+) — the hat operates as the I-am-Robin’s-captain token.
- Tama (Wano, ~Ch. 911+) — Luffy gives the hat to Tama as a protection-promise.
- Possibly Bonney (Egghead, Ch. 1100+, recent-chapter).
