The seed
Ch. 424 (pp. 11-13): Kokoro reveals she is “an icefish mermaid” and delivers the first on-page mermaid biology:
- Mermaids are “a mysterious species.”
- The legend that mermaids are dugongs “is true.”
- At thirty — the prime of a mermaid’s life — a mermaid’s tailfin splits in two, so she can live on land (which is why a grandmotherly mermaid has feet; Sanji: “never heard of a mermaid with feet”).
- “If you go to Fish-Man Island someday, you’ll understand.”
- By extension, her grandchild Chimney is part-mermaid (“You should have noticed! You’re her grandchild!” / “fins and scales”).
Why it matters
This is the first concrete mermaid-biology install in the series, planted ~190 chapters before the Fish-Man Island arc (Ch. 612+). It pre-loads the mermaid cast (Camie at Sabaody, the Mermaid Café, the royal mermaids) and the running gag that mermaids’ lower halves defy outsider expectation. It also weaves the real-world dugong/manatee–mermaid folklore directly into canon (fairy-tale-overlay). The payoff is forward (Sabaody ch 491+, Fish-Man Island arc ch 612+), so this seed stays pending.
