After a single Thunder Bagua blow drops Luffy face-down and beaten (p. 17), Kaido — who could trivially finish him — stops instead, intrigued: “What king was that…? Boy…” The Emperor’s deliberate non-kill and direct address seed his interest in Luffy and foreshadow that Kaido will dispose of the boy in some way other than execution.
