The seed
The two katakana of Imu (イム) can be read as the radicals of the kanji 仏 (hotoke, Buddha) — イ is the ninben (人偏, person-radical) and ム is the katakana mu that forms the right-hand component of 仏. Read together: イ + ム ≈ 仏.
Pair with Nerona (ネロナ) — whose three katakana similarly compose the kanji 神 (kami, god) (ネ is the shimesuhen / 礻 deity-radical; ロ and ナ build the right-side components). Together: ‘God-Buddha,’ a deliberate divinity-stack for the WG’s hidden sovereign.
Three further encodings ride along:
- Backwards reading: Imu (イム) → Umi (ウミ, 海) = ‘sea/ocean.’ The One Piece world’s defining element, the medium that suppresses Devil Fruits. A ‘Lord of the Sea’ name for the throne behind the throne.
- Goroawase: イ (i = 1, on’yomi) + ム (mu = 6, kun’yomi via 六) → ‘16.’ Possible rank-among-original-Twenty-Kings encoding.
- Nerona ↔ Emperor Nero — the Roman emperor who burned Rome to clear ground for his Domus Aurea and blamed/scapegoated Christians for the fire. Maps directly onto Imu’s MO of defacing bounty posters (Reverie) and scapegoating-then-erasing inconvenient kingdoms (cf. the obliteration of Lulusia).
The payoff
Full payoff awaits the canonical reveal of Imu’s identity / Void-Century origin. But the predictive force of the name is already substantial: ‘God-Buddha-Nero-Sovereign-of-the-Sea’ as a single compressed gloss anticipates every revealed Imu behavior to date.

The kana-radical reading is a JP-community deep-cut (Japanese forums and a CBR write-up by 2022; surfaced in EN-language essays around the same time). The Library of Ohara’s chapter-secrets posts canonize the イム = 仏 + ネロナ = 神 reading.
Why this matters
This is Oda’s orthographic-encoding playbook at its purest: the shape of the katakana — not their phonetic value or kanji homophone — encodes the meaning. To decode an Imu-class name, you must:
- Try the phonetic / homophone layer (Imu → umi backwards).
- Try the radical-decomposition layer (イム → 仏, ネロナ → 神).
- Try the goroawase / number layer.
- Try the historical/mythological homophone layer (Nerona → Nero).
When all four yield consistent readings, you are looking at a maximum-encoded name — a name carrying load-bearing future-reveal information.
