The seed

Forward-payoff

Predicted Ch. 66-68: Krieg deploys the MH5 (the gas his crew feared in Ch. 60) on his own crew and the Baratie cooks; Gin uses his own body to shield Sanji from the gas, dying from it. The very gas Krieg threatened the cook with in Ch. 60 becomes the gas the captain uses on his refusing officer. The arc’s emotional climax.

Why this matters

The lieutenant-defection-via-kindness-debt is one of the East-Blue arc’s most emotionally compressed character-arc payoffs (44 → 61 = ~17 chapters of setup-to-refusal). Pattern-cross: the minor-officer-who-becomes-the-moral-conscience arc-grammar recurs (Kuina-flashback for Zoro, Bell-mère for Nami, eventually Bon Clay for Luffy at Impel Down). Gin is the first East-Blue installment of this grammar.
