The seed

Ch. 71 page 6 — “We fish-men are evolved humans who have developed the ability to breathe seawater.”

Why this matters

The fishmen’s self-naming as evolved-humans (not non-humans, not merfolk, not aquatic-humanoids) is a load-bearing taxonomy choice. The chapter installs the internal-mythology version of fishmen-racial-identity — they don’t claim to be different, they claim to be the next step. The taxonomy is a hierarchical-superiority claim built into the racial self-name.

Forward-payoff: the Fish-Man Island saga will reveal that evolved-humans is fishman racist propaganda — historically, fishmen and merfolk are a separate-and-coequal race, and the evolved framing is a supremacist inversion of the historical reality. The merfolk-vs-fishman taxonomy (Ch. 608+) further complicates the Ch. 71 evolved-humans simplification — merfolk and fishmen are distinct races within the same broad aquatic-humanoid category, neither evolved-from-humans.
