The payoff
Predicted: every later Straw Hat with a prior allegiance gets a shed-the-prior-crew beat before formally joining:
- Sanji — quasi-departure from the Baratie (Ch. 68). The Baratie staff “kick him off” so he’s free to join.
- Chopper — quasi-departure from Drum Island after Hiriluk’s death-by-association (Ch. 153). Released from the local doctor-village by the same village.
- Robin — explicit departure from Baroque Works after Crocodile’s betrayal (Ch. 218). The prior allegiance is severed by the prior captain’s action.
- Franky — de-facto handoff of the Franky Family leadership (Ch. 437). Released by his own crew.
- Brook — farewell to the Rumbar Pirates’ bones (Ch. 489). The prior crew is literally dead but the ritual is still performed.
- Jinbei — resignation from the Sun Pirates (Ch. 901). The latest and most formally-staged instance.
Each is a variation on Usopp’s Ch. 40 ritual. The pattern’s existence is the prediction.
Earliest known caller
The recruitment-pattern reading is widely held; the de-recruitment-ritual variant is identifiable by Ch. 489 (Brook) when the third clear instance has stacked.
Why this matters
The prior-allegiance-dissolution beat is the moral pre-condition of joining the Straw Hats: Luffy will not recruit someone who is still bound to a prior captain (alive or dead). The ritual makes the recruit free to accept the offer. Usopp’s Ch. 40 disbandment is the cleanest and earliest on-page instance, and it’s explicit (the word “DISBANDED” appears) — Oda is teaching the reader the ritual openly here so that later, more compressed instances are legible.
