The seed
Mont Blanc Cricket introduces the South Bird as a creature whose instinct “always shows it the right direction… the best of them all” (Ch. 230 pp. 6, 8) and explicitly states the crew cannot reach the Knock-Up Stream without it because the Log Pose only finds islands, not “a patch of water” (page 7).
The payoff
(What it turned out to mean.) Payoff lands on the run to the Stream — the bird steers the reinforced Going Merry south to the eruption point.
