The seed

Ch. 71 page 2 — Nojiko: “Yes, Nami and I were orphans. We grew up together in this house.”

Why this matters

Confirms the step-sister relationship (Ch. 70) is via common adoption, not via shared blood parent. The family structure is two-orphans-adopted-by-one-step-mother — both girls were taken in by Bell-mère independently before the adoption created their step-sister bond.

Forward-payoff: the Arlong-arc flashback chapters will deliver the orphan-pickup origin scenes — the moments where Bell-mère found each girl and chose to adopt them. The two-orphans-one-adoptive-mother structure is the foundation for the arc’s emotional architecture: the Bell-mère death is a triple-loss (Nami’s adoptive-mother, Nojiko’s adoptive-mother, the village’s protector).
