Why this matters
One of the highest-stakes name-before-reveal grammars in the series. Oda installs the brother-bond at the moment of Ace’s first appearance, refusing to confirm in this chapter — the confirmation comes immediately after. The seed is load-bearing for the Marineford arc ~700 chapters forward; Ace’s execution is the structural fulcrum of the post-timeskip pivot.
The structural irony of Ch. 157: Luffy is in the same room as Ace (Spice Bean tavern, pp. 14-19), shakes Ace awake (p. 15), then exits through a wall chasing food (p. 19) without recognizing him. The brothers-in-the-same-room-and-still-don’t-meet beat is the chapter’s emotional engine.
